Sunny Sweeney at Cavalier Theater

Sunny Sweeney from Austin, Texas brings wit and honesty into her confessional, complex songwriting for grown-ups, still whiskey-drenched and honk-tonk-ready. Drugs, death, the ex-wife, drinking, devotion, and longing for a child: it’s all here, raw and real. It seem like the world is more open now than ever before to smart women singing smart country. It’s about time. Sweeney is a veteran of the trade, and has logged her miles the old-school way. A three-year residency at the Poodle Dog Lounge in Austin––“It was a dump,” she says. “They didn’t even have a credit card machine or liquor license.”––along with improv and stand-up comedy experience went a long way toward teaching her how to hold a room of cynical drunks in the palm of her hand. The mastery of holes in the wall, major label stint, and serious songwriting chops make Sweeney something of a rarity: an artist with barroom cred, mainstream validation, and songs meaty enough for listening rooms. Or, as Rolling Stone put it in September 2016: “Sweeney is one of the rare entertainers who can hold her own at CMA Fest as well as the Americana Fest.” Her appearance at the Cavalier will come fresh off a tour with Cody Jinks and right before a run of shows opening for Miranda Lambert that illustrates Rolling Stone's point. Whitey Morgan with Alex Williams at Cavalier Theater

Hailing from the hard hit, economically depressed Flint, Michigan that has shaped his songwriting, Whitey Morgan and the 78's play a road tested and whiskey soaked brand of outlaw honky tonk country that is dirty and dangerous. Since forming in 2005 and cutting their teeth in the Detroit music scene, they quickly became established as a live band to be reckoned with, playing on average 200 shows a year while releasing 3 albums. Alex Williams was raised on his grandparents' Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson albums that influenced his playing. He's part of a new breed of upstart outsiders bouncing around Nashville, writing music that at once sounds both modern and traditional, channeling the raw, authentic sound that's made stars out of outlaw singers and red dirt rockers. His live show is a force to be reckoned with, earning him dates with everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Hank Williams Jr.. Grateful Dead Experience: The Schwag at Cavalier Theater

The Schwag is a band dedicated to carrying on the music and the vibe of the legendary Grateful Dead. Founded in 1991 as a local St. Louis-based Dead tribute, the group began touring after the 1995 death of Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, and has played more than 2,500 shows in 18 states, with an average of 150 shows a year, and a working repertoire of 200 songs. In 1997, The Schwag began their own self-produced festivals, Schwagstocks. After holding the events at progressively larger venues in Missouri, in 2004 bassist and founding member Jimmy Tebeau and his wife Tiffany Tebeau purchased Camp Zoe, a 330-acre former youth camp near Salem, Mo., in the heart of the Ozarks, to serve as a permanent home for Schwagstock. In 2005, Schwagstocks and other festivals at Zoe drew more than 30,000 people to the site, and the first event of 2006, Schwagstock 29, drew a crowd of more than 7,500. Besides music, festival-goers enjoy swimming in the creek that runs through the property, canoe trips in the nearby Ozark National Scenic Riverways, on-site camping, nightly drum circles and bonfires, and shopping from the vendors on the site's "Shakedown Street." Besides bassist-vocalist Tebeau, the group's members are Stu Allen, guitar and vocals; and Brian Sigmund, drums. Several Schwag members have extensive jazz training, and the band's live performances emphasize improvisation and spontaneity. Like the Dead, The Schwag operates without set lists. Its only rules are to avoid repeating songs from recent shows and to give high-energy performances that encourage dancing and good vibes. The Schwag is an established group that has attracted some prominent members of the jam-band community to sit in on their sets, including Merl Saunders, the late Johnny Johnson, Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers, Mike Gordon of Phish, Fred Tackett of Little Feat, Vince Herman and Drew Emmit of Leftover Salmon; Bill Nershi, Michael Kang, Michael Travis, and Jason Hann of String Cheese Incident; Melvin Seals of JGB, Scott Law, Pete Sears, Chuck Berry, the late Vince Welnick, and many other great players. Making his return to the Cavalier, Nashville based country singer Josh Thompson. His songwriting captures his humble, hard-working blue-collar upbringing in small town Wisconsin that resonates with his fan base, combined with the feel good warmth of celebrating with some beers on a Friday night. Commander Cody at Cavalier Theater

Commander Cody helped invent a whole new style of music during the late 60s and early 70s while based out of the fertile music community of San Francisco. With his biggest hit being the classic "Hot Rod Lincoln" off his debut album in 1971, he pioneered a retro-revisionist country-rock with healthy doses of western swing, rockabilly and stripped down basic rock and roll. A string of classic albums, including "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas" which Rolling Stone later named as one of the best 100 albums of all time followed, charting songs on both the rock and country top 40 charts, before the original band broke up in 1977. He has since relocated to the east coast in 1997 and has been going strong ever since wowing crowds at festivals, giant biker conventions, sleazy down home roadhouses and posh venues. S. Carey at Cavalier Theater

S. Carey comes out of the infamous Eau Claire indie rock scene as a classicaly trained percusionist and pianist. He joined Bon Iver as their drummer when Justin Vernon hit the road to promote his debut chart topping album and has become a mainstay of the band ever since. While on tour, he developed his own song writing ambitions that combine austere folk and modern classical, and has since released two albums as well as two EPs of his lush sonics, warmth, reverb and dusty textures of music that is heavily inspired by the natural world. Noxroy is the experimental solo project of La Crosse native Andrew Fitzpatrick who plays guitar in Bon Iver as well as Volcano Choir and All Tiny Creatures. Before graduating to the indie rock big leagues and touring the world, Andrew's Talking Heads cover band Houses in Motion was a regular favorite in town for many years, and was also the very first concert on stage at the Cavalier Theater. For those of you who attended the Eaux Claires Festival this past summer you might have gotten the chance to see Noxroy on the big stage already. Following the widespread global acclaim for the Justin Vernon produced ‘If I Was’, The Staves enjoyed a fantastic summer of festivals, with a standout performance on The Park Stage at Glastonbury. They were announced as the special guests on Florence and the Machine’s sold-out arena tour of the UK, where they wowed Florence’s broad audiences. The Staves finished the year with their own UK tour, including their largest headline show to date at London’s Roundhouse. 2016 will see the band taking ‘If I Was’ on the road again on a headline tour of North America, in addition to a string of festival dates on both sides of the Atlantic.  Doors 7:00/Music 7:30 $15adv/$18 DOS All Ages

Sunny Sweeney at Cavalier Theater

Cavalier Theater Thu, Mar 1st 2018
8:00 PM — 11:00 PM

Cavalier Theater Sat, Feb 17th 2018
8:00 PM — 11:00 PM

Cavalier Theater Sat, Feb 10th 2018
8:00 PM — 11:30 PM
Event Ended

Originally getting a guitar for his 21st birthday so he could sing songs around a campfire, he quickly developed a knack for songwriting and made the move to Nashville to give it a shot. After paying his dues for 4 years, his debut album in 2010 saw two Top Twenty singles. With two Top 10 albums, 6 Top 40 singles and 3 Top 20 radio singles to his credit, his latest album "Changes: Vol. II" was realeased in April of this year and has seen new songs getting radio airplay. The other time Josh performed at the Cavalier in December of 2014, the concert sold out the day tickets went on sale, the only musical performer that has happened to here.

Cavalier Theater Fri, Mar 31st 2017

Matt Monsoor (music/art) has become a staple on the local scene, using looping pedals and a variety of instruments to create an atmospheric sound collage to back his artful lyrics

The Staves finished the year with their own UK tour, including their largest headline show to date at London’s Roundhouse. 2016 will see the band taking ‘If I Was’ on the road again on a headline tour of North America, in addition to a string of festival dates on both sides of the Atlantic.
